Trending3 minute read

My winter coat spends more time on my passenger seat than on me.

Note: After reading this, you'll know why yours ends up there too. And what I wear now instead, from October to March.

A winter coat crumpled on the passenger seat of a car in a grocery store parking lot

Every errand goes the same way.

Here's a normal Saturday for me. Grocery store, pharmacy, the bank, gas.

I put my coat on to walk out to the car. It's cold out. Fine.

Then I get in, and the coat bunches up behind my back. The seatbelt cuts right across it. I can't turn around to back out. So it comes off and goes on the passenger seat.

At the store, I put it back on to cross the parking lot. Ten minutes in, I'm sweating by the deli. So it comes off again, and I push the cart with one hand and hold the coat with the other.

Back to the car. Coat off. Pharmacy. Coat on. Coat off.

One Saturday I counted. I put that coat on and took it off eleven times before lunch.

So most days, I stopped putting it back on. It rode around on the passenger seat. And I was cold in every parking lot in town.

That's every errand. Every week. From the first cold morning in October until spring.

So I tried everything else.

I had a closet full of half-answers.

The short vest. My arms were free, and I loved that. But it stops at my hip. Over leggings, the wind went straight for my backside and my legs.

The fleece. Soft. The wind walked right through it.

Layers. A cardigan under a jacket. Then I was peeling things off in the checkout line with my purse in my teeth.

Every one of them fixed half the problem. The other half was always waiting for me in the parking lot.

I figured that's just how fall goes. You're too hot or you're too cold. Pick one.

My daughter didn't agree.

She didn't ask. She just sent it.

My daughter rode along with me one Saturday. She watched that coat go on and off at every stop.

She didn't say much. But on Wednesday, a box showed up on my porch.

Inside was a vest. A long one.

I'll be honest. My first thought was no.

I'd seen long vests at the store. I figured long meant bulky. I figured my arms would freeze. And I wasn't going to wear anything shiny that crinkled every time I sat down.

She called that night. "Just wear it Saturday, Mom. If you hate it, give it back to me."

She had one herself. She'd been wearing it all month.

So on Saturday I wore it. Here's what I didn't know yet.

Why it works on a day like mine

My coat works if you're standing outside. But I don't spend my day standing outside. I spend it going in and out.

This vest works for in and out. Here's what that looks like at every stop.

  • In the car. No sleeves. Nothing bunches behind your back. Nothing fights the seatbelt. You can turn around to back out. You zip it in the kitchen and you never take it off to drive.
  • In the store. Your arms are out, so you don't overheat the minute you walk in. Unzip it at the door and keep shopping. No coat over your arm. Both hands on the cart.
  • In the parking lot. It's long. It hits mid-thigh on a taller woman and just above the knee on a shorter one. It covers your backside over leggings, which is right where the wind gets you. A hood for the walk across. Deep pockets for your phone and both your hands.
  • Sitting down. Snaps at the hem and a two-way zipper. Undo the bottom and you can sit in the car, in the waiting room, or on a bench without it riding up.
  • And your arms? They don't get cold, because your middle doesn't. This was the part I didn't believe. Keep your core warm over a sweater and your arms stop noticing they're out.
  • And it looks right. Matte, not shiny. Slim quilting and a little shape through the body. It doesn't crinkle and it doesn't swallow you. It looks like something you picked out, not something you settled for.

So it's:

  • Not a coat you peel off in the checkout line
  • Not a vest that quits at your hip
  • Not a fleece the wind walks right through
  • Not one more thing living on your passenger seat

My first Saturday in it

I put it on over my gray sweater at eight in the morning and zipped it in the kitchen.

I got in the car and didn't take it off. The seatbelt sat flat. I turned around to back out without fighting a pile of coat.

Grocery store. I kept it on. Unzipped it by the deli. That was it. No sweating. No coat over my arm. Both hands on the cart.

I loaded the trunk. Then the pharmacy, the bank, gas. Same vest, zipped and unzipped. It never came off.

At the pharmacy counter, the woman behind me tapped my shoulder. "Where did you get that?"

I didn't take it off until I got home. And I only took it off because I was home.

My coat stayed on the hook. The passenger seat is empty now.

"But is it warm enough for December?"

I asked the same thing. So here's the honest answer.

It's not a blizzard coat. Anyone who tells you a vest is a blizzard coat is selling you something.

Over a sweater, it's my layer from the first cold morning in October right through March. One woman wrote that hers "held its own down to the 40's with a warm long sleeve shirt under it." That's been my experience too.

When it drops below freezing, it goes under my coat. My middle stays warm, and I'm not stacking two sets of sleeves.

So the coat comes out for the worst days in January. Every other day, it's this.

Where it lands on you

This was my other worry. Every "long" vest online seems to mean something different.

I'm 5'4" and I wear a medium. It hits about four inches above my knee. Right where the photos showed.

Here's where it lands on other heights:

Your heightWhere it hits
5'1"Just above the knee
5'4"About four inches above the knee
5'8"Mid-thigh, still covers everything over leggings

Order your usual size. There's already room for a sweater. Sizes run XS to 3X. And if the size is off, the exchange is free.

What other women are saying

★★★★★

"My daughter had one of these and I was not sure I wanted it, but she insisted I get one. Well, I have gone from not thinking I wanted it to the jacket I wear every day. It is great for running around, your arms are free, not contained in a bulky jacket, and this keeps you warm enough to run in and out of stores, go for a walk or take the kids to the park."

This is the part where I tell you to hurry

Not because of a countdown clock. Because of the calendar.

Every cold morning between now and March, you'll choose again. Too hot or too cold. Coat on. Coat off. Another coat on the passenger seat.

It ships in 1 to 2 business days. XS to 3X. 14 colors.

And here's how sure I am. Wear it to the store, the pharmacy, the dog walk. If it isn't the thing you reach for instead of your coat, send it back within 30 days. If the size is off, the exchange is free.

This year, I'm returning the favor. I ordered one for my daughter. The green one. She doesn't know yet.

  • Exactly what I was looking for

"I wanted something warm enough for chilly mornings but not as heavy as a full winter coat, and this has been perfect. The longer length gives great coverage, especially when I’m wearing leggings, and the side snaps make it much easier to sit in the car or move around."

    - Danielle Robertson

  • Lightweight but still keeps me warm

"I was pleasantly surprised by how warm this feels without being bulky. It is easy to throw over a sweatshirt or long sleeve shirt, and it does not make me feel restricted when I am out running errands. The fit has enough room for layering, but it still looks flattering and put together. I have already worn it several times this week."

    - Megan Lehrans

  • So easy to style

"This works with almost everything in my closet. I have worn it with jeans and boots, leggings and sneakers, and even over a matching lounge set. The longer cut makes a basic outfit look more polished, and the hood is a nice extra when the weather changes. I ordered my usual size and had plenty of room underneath."

    - Alyssa K

  • Practical details actually matter

"The pockets are a great size, the zipper feels smooth, and the side snaps make a bigger difference than I expected. I can wear it comfortably in the car, while walking, or when I need to keep moving throughout the day. It is warm without feeling stiff or overly puffy. I would absolutely get another color."

    - Lauren Mitchell

  • Great everyday outer layer

"This has been ideal for school drop-off, walks, travel days, and quick trips out of the house. It gives the coverage of a longer coat but feels much lighter and easier to wear. The fit is comfortable, the fabric feels nice, and the overall style is simple enough to wear with anything. Definitely one of my favorite cold-weather purchases."

Because the coat is too much most of the day. Too hot in the car, too hot indoors, so it lives on the passenger seat. This keeps your core warm and your arms free, and it stays on from pickup to the game to the walk home. Once it's cold enough for a coat, it goes under it.

A regular vest stops at your hip, so your legs are cold and nothing is covered over leggings. This one runs mid-thigh to just above the knee. Covered, warm, and it still looks like you tried.
